The Early Days of Poker in the United States- 18th Century

Poker was invented in the U.S. in the Mississippi delta in the eighteenth Century, according to Brittanica.com. The game spread to other nations in 1872 after Colonel Jacob Schenck crafted poker rules and sent them to England. Poque is one of the earliest poker forms that was popular in New Orleans.

Poker’s Expansion in America-19th Century

Goldrush and Mississippi River journeys played a crucial role in spreading poker in the nineteenth Century, especially in saloons. 

The Civil War made the game famous in camps as soldiers played it during their free time. The western culture slowly accepted poker, and it became the most renowned card game in the country.

Poker’s Turning Point-20th Century

Several poker variations, including Texas Hold ’em, were invented as the public continued gaining interest in the game. Women also started playing it, and more people took part in poker tournaments outside saloons.

Texas Hold ’em was invented in Robstown, Texas, and spread throughout the state. The community game was fast-paced and had a lot of action.

The first World Series of Poker (WSOP) tournament occurred in Las Vegas in 1970. It had a unique format, and players without invitational cards didn’t enter the venue.

The 1973 WSOP was the first poker event to be televised in America. It influenced the emergence of poker shows and other televised events such as Poker After Dark.

California legalized Texas Hold ’em in 1980, and poker rooms were set shortly afterward. For example, the first online poker room started operating in 1998.

Mike Caro took part in creating “Planet Poker.” The project provided a single cash game table that ran all night.

Modern Poker-21st Century

Chris Moneymaker, a Georgian accountant, won a $86 dollar satellite and qualified for the 2003 WSOP Main Event. He later got 839 entries and won a $2,500,000 prize after winning the event. The infamous player defeated poker pros like Sammy Farha and became the first player to qualify for the World Series of Poker Main Event online and win it.

By 2009, the public had recognized many poker players, and their following matched that of movie stars and top musicians. These included Daniel Negreanu, Phil Ivey, and Phil Helmuth.

Isidulr1 started gaining popularity in 2009, and many people feared facing him despite being infamous at first. He defeated several professional players like Phil Ivey, Patric Antonious, and Tom Dwan.

The United States Department of Justice seized the domains of several leading poker card rooms and casinos on April 15th, popularly called the Black Friday. This affected many poker pros who had huge sums of money in their accounts, and no one could predict what the federal government would do next. 

American poker has a colorful history. The game has evolved over the years to meet players’ demands. Some people play it live, while others engage in popular poker tournaments online to win huge cash prizes.
